Hi MJFinklestein,

Welcome! What you’re describing is such an important part of this process. Rejecting diet culture doesn’t mean you have to immediately feel okay about the possibility of not becoming smaller. There can be real grief and fear involved, especially when body size affects comfort, access, and experiences you want to share with your daughters.

Rejecting diet culture also doesn’t mean pretending that we live in a world that accommodates all bodies equally. Airplane seats, amusement rides, and other spaces can have very real size limitations. Those experiences are real—and understandably painful.

And there’s another piece here: it's also a gift you give to your daughters—helping to end the legacy of culture and creating a different relationship with food and bodies for the next generation.

Be gentle with yourself. You don’t have to resolve all of these feelings before moving forward. Curiosity rather than certainty is a wonderful place to begin.

So glad you are here—it’s never too late! Having the realization that “dieting does not work and makes my life very stressful” is a great place to start.

My suggestion is to be patient and compassionately curious with yourself as you begin. Intuitive Eating is a process of unlearning years of diet culture while rebuilding trust in your body—and that takes time. There’s no need to do it perfectly or all at once.

Hi Michaelvh,
First, welcome—you haven’t done anything wrong by posting here, and I’m glad you reached out.

I can understand why you’re feeling confused by these conflicting messages. Having an eating disorder does not mean that Intuitive Eating concepts don’t apply. IE is often incorporated into eating-disorder treatment, although some principles may need to be adapted during recovery—for example, using structured eating when hunger and fullness cues aren’t yet reliable.

I’m also concerned about being told that unless you join a weight-loss program, you “won’t make it to 75.” Family history is certainly important, but cardiovascular risk is much more complex than body weight alone. Importantly, research has found that weight cycling—repeatedly losing and regaining weight—is associated with increased cardiovascular risk.

The concept of “food addiction” is also debated. Feeling out of control around food doesn’t necessarily mean addiction; restriction itself can intensify cravings, food preoccupation, and feelings of loss of control.

Given your eating-disorder history, I’d encourage working with healthcare professionals who understand both eating disorders and weight-inclusive care. You can take your cardiovascular health seriously without making weight loss the focus.

And please—no need to apologize. You’re welcome here.

Warmly,
Evelyn

I too am new to IEC, and am struggling with all that you indicate in your post. I wish I had a good reply to be helpful. As it is, I couldn't figure out how to create my own post, so I'm kind of tail-gating onto yours, and would ask the group the following: Iam struggling with belonging to a weight-loss program my PCP recommended, with them telling me "or else with your family history of heart attack and stoke, you won't make it to 75," while I'm still trying to absorb the concept of rejecting diet culture. As well, my PCP said the the IE concepts "may not apply to you, as you have an eating disorder; and addiction is quite different from emotional eating," though I'm not sure how-so. Thank you for listening - whomever's out there and happens to read this. For all I know I'm writing all the wrong things or breaking all the protocols for posting or replying, since this only my first time writing on this site, and I'm piggybacking onto someone else's post. My apologies, and thank you in advance for your kind patience.

Hi everyone. I’m new to IE and working through the 4th ed Tribole & Resch book. I’m wondering how you all were able to fully reject diet culture. I’ve been aware of the research for years - how diets can lead to eating disorders and weight gain, the risks of weight cycling, etc. Logically I know that diets don’t work.

But the idea of abandoning hope of losing weight (and more-so being smaller) is kinda terrifying to me. I don’t care about the numbers on the scale, but I do struggle with the idea that rejecting diet culture may mean that I might never be able to fit comfortably into an airplane seat or be comfortable at a concert, even more scary is the thought that I might never be able to go on carnival rides, trampoline parks, etc. with my daughters. That is what I’m really struggling with.

Any advice on this is appreciated.

I got desperate recently and tried the Simple app. After logging every single thing for 24 days, I cancelled my subscription. I realized the daily weigh ins and tracking everything was making me obsess over food. I got down on myself because I did not lose weight, but gained it. No more. I did IE over 20 years ago. I got lost somewhere along the way. I have found my way back. I am trusting myself.
